Minutes into their descent to the surface of the Moon on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin found, to their alarm, that they were off course and heading for a crash landing in a deadly boulder-strewn area.
The on-board computers started to shout warnings at the crew. The lunar module was out of control.
When Armstrong looked through the window, he saw the treacherous surface approaching fast. He instinctively took manual control of the craft and, with Aldrin calling out altitude and velocity data, navigated to touchdown on a safe surface with only 25 seconds of fuel left, barely enough to return to orbit.
There were tense moments while Mission Control in Houston waited for a message from the crew.
Then Armstrong’s voice came over the tannoy: ”Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.”
Mission Control erupted and the flight controller said: “Roger Tranquility, we copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We’re breathing again. Thanks a lot.”
It was Armstrong’s quick thinking and creative approach that triumphed over the failure of technology. This story of human intervention to secure a major achievement has resonances today. The channels of communication may be automated and ‘optimised’, but what we communicate is a creative human endeavour.
You can’t automate creativity.
At Houston PR we put creativity in charge of everything we do. For messages to resonate they need to be fresh and inspiring. For stories to spread like wildfire, they need to be infectious and genuinely interesting. For organisations to navigate the complexities of communication, they require a deft hand on the steering wheel.
We have worked with many of the world’s leading brands, delivering communications programmes that make a measurable difference to their business and to their customers. We are an experienced and creative team of instinctive problem-solvers, bringing our expertise to a dazzling array of conundrums.
