This useful reminder just in from a contributor to our How Not To Guide to PR:

“One of my pet peeves is PRs calling our reception desk and asking to be put through to the newsdesk, when the “news” is just a list of gift ideas for Mother’s Day or a survey about sex habits of the UK’s bearded men. This isn’t news. Newsdesk tends to cover serious issues and politics. If you’re calling a general number, ask for the lifestyle desk, the tech editor, the showbiz desk. Don’t automatically say newsdesk, or all you’ll find is an irritable news editor who will have to tell you to go elsewhere.”
